If you’ve seen my review already, you won’t be surprised by I am recommending this film today but if you missed my review please check it out below!
‘Materialists’ (2025) is the newest feature from Celine Song, writer, director who brought us ‘Past Lives’. Following a young, ambitious New York match maker who finds herself is a difficult love triangle between her broke ex boyfriend and rich new fling.
This film may appear to be a silly romance comedy from the outside but trust me, it is so much more than that. It is a tale of self discovery disguised as a love story, love is merely a player or a distraction in the bigger game of life. ‘Materialists’ tackles the notion of expectation vs reality, it challenges the idea of following your head over your heart.
Human beings try to apply math or logic to something which can only be felt, love is so much deeper than height, attractiveness or material assets and this film intelligently and poetically reminds you of this.
This film is human, it is simple, it is poetic and I had a little cry in the cinema after watching it. Something about it just spoke to me.
