Left Completely Empty, My Heart was in my Throat & Suffocated by Sadness
It is rare that a film will leave me completely speechless when the credits roll. It is rare but it is not unheard of that a film leaves such an impression on me that I cannot think of anything else for days, La Bola Negra did just this. After witnessing this film at tiff, then experiencing the standing ovation was one of the most beautiful moments I have ever had in a cinema screening. I felt part of a deeper admiration and conversation surrounding this film, La Bola Negra is a film inherently rooted in identity, memory, legacy and sacrifice. La Bola Negra is a less so a film and more a work of art moving across the screen.
A film that connects legacy across time and mends the holes in history and provides clarity to lost stories.
La Bola Negra is a captivating homage to Federico García Lorca, a Spanish poet, playwright, and theatre director who died in 1936.
Inspired by Federico García Lorca’s unfinished work, the film spans nearly a century, exploring queer desire, fascism, and inherited trauma.
Award Season Doesn’t Know What’s Hit It!!!!!
I am unable to highlight a select few of the cast because every single performance in this film is absolutely groundbreaking. I was moved by every word of dialogue, by every touch by every glance, by every breath.
Guitarricadelafuente, considering this is his acting debut I was absolutely in awe of his performance. Alongside Miguel Bernardeau, the pair were able to perform some of the most heartbreaking, intimate moments on screen. I was invested in their performances with every ounce of my being. Carlos González provided the most relatable, contemporary storyline for us in this feature. He acts as the tether to our connection, the character who sews the thread between all the characters and he does so with beautiful, subtle conviction. Milo Quifes also provides a heartbreakingly tender and vulnerable performance, his scene in the snowy landscape truly took my breath away.
Penélope Cruz, despite having a small role in this feature, she injected a new layer of life into the story. She is convincing, invested and her small moments on screen are some of the most memorable.
Poetically Ambitious & Visually Transcendent
The narrative weaves across time, connecting and bonding three men, their desires and their fears. Through Republican Spain in 1932, T he Spanish Civil War in 1937 and a contemporary juxtaposition in 2017. Each year and each character commences on their own journey of self discovery, identity, legacy, survival and sacrifice. It is truly poetic to compare the lives of each man and walk a mile in their shoes, comparing the struggled and obstacles of each timeline. La Bola Negra is a film that exhausts you both emotionally and physically, from the opening scene you are catapulted into chaos and dread, the tension stayed in my body throughout the film. The directors intentionally create an atmosphere of uncertainty, you fall in love with the characters but you are never able to truly relax because of their surroundings.
A Love Letter to Federico García Lorca | Historical context.
La Bola Negra is a captivating homage to Federico García Lorca, a prominent 20th-century Spanish poet, playwright and theatre director who was assassinated by Nationalist forces in August 1936 at the start of the Spanish Civil War.
The films plot is inspired by Federico García Lorca’s unfinished work, La Bola Negra. He only wrote four surviving pages before his death. The play featured his first explicit gay protagonist. This film attempts to fill in the gaps of his missing pages.
La Bola Negra (2026) strives to provide its audience with a grand, transcendent experience. Setting exceedingly high artistic goals that push beyond the traditional limits of cinema. Visually, La Bola Negra bursts through the screen with extreme use of lighting, framing, design and movement. Emotionally, La Bola Negra takes you on a journey with motif, imagery and nuance in every frame. The film speaks to the queer community and the obstacles when trying to exist, the implications of war and anger, the pain within family and the scars through time.
La Bola Negra deserves to be seen, it deserves to be heard and it needs to be praised for its story, its history and its execution. If La Bola Negra walks away with zero Oscars, I will be absolutely flabbergasted. This is a film that will leave you broken, empty and suffocated by sadness... in the most beautiful way.
