Is Olivia Wilde's 'The Invite' the Best Comedy of the Year? - Film Review

The dinner party from hell. Where boundaries are crossed, secrets are exposed and beautiful meats will get eaten. The Invite is a hilariously well executed commentary on relationships, intimacy, vulnerability and the restrictions of marriage. This film is a sexy mess from beginning to end.
The Invite is an adaptation of the Spanish film The People Upstairs (directed by Cesc Gay), which was originally based on his stage play. The film takes direct inspiration from its predecessor and functions like a play, filmed in chronological order and dressed like a stage. Technically this film is gorgeous, the set feels alive, the props feel integral and the characters move freely and authentically within the space.
The performances are easily some of the best I have seen all year. The entire cast have impalpable chemistry and intense comic timing. Olivia and Seth sell the comedic moments physically, contrasting Edward and Penelope who really lean into the subtlety of their performances. A simple way to distinguish who has the power in the situation. I loved how the power kept shifting. I was enamoured by the performances, blown away by their execution of comedy and humanity.
Overall, this film is a study of marriage and relationships, on the surface it’s a laugh out loud comedy with an incredible collection of actors bringing their a-game but as you peel away the layers of this film, it is a portrait of a failing marriage. What appears to be a celebration of freedom and vulnerability leads these characters to understand they might be better apart. For me, this is a film that delivers in everything to be a success. Sharp, witty dialogue, a faultless script, masterful actors, skilful cinematography, exceptional framing and unique direction all contained in a beautiful set.
I did not expect The Invite to be one of my favourite films of 2026, so far but it truly is. This film surprised me, it moved me, it excited me and it made me laugh.
I genuinely believe 'The Invite' will be an Academy Award contender for Best Adapted Screenplay. Potentially a few performances at other award ceremonies.
