‘Something Very Bad is Going to Happen’

‘Something Very Bad is Going to Happen’ is a supernatural horror series that keeps you guessing until the final moments, the show has mystery elements that lead you in one direction only to be taken down a new path with endless possibilities. The show is ominous and plays on your mind, it reminded me of Mike Flanagan’s style of series. Slow burning episodes with eerie and disturbing moments and a huge explosion of drama and chaos at the end. If you liked Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher or The Haunting of Hill House, I guarantee ‘Something Very Bad is Going to Happen’ will excite you.

Camila Morrone stars in the lead role of Rachel, the central character with whom the chaos surrounds and follows. She has featured in shows like Daisy Jones and The Six and The Night Manager but this is a new tone for her and she was brilliant. She is an easy performer to watch, she brings a realistic and intriguing approach to the horror genre that I liked. She acts as the unassuming catalyst for everything that goes wrong but you cannot help but root for her success, the character of Rachel was simple but Morrone was able to add enough character and humour to make her likeable.

Alongside Camila Morrone, Adam DiMarco plays her husband to be Nicky. I know DiMarco as a primarily comedic actor but he worked in this role, similarly to Rachel, Nicky was a character with little substance but the performers were able to flesh out their relationship enough to keep me intrigued. The rest of the cast all act as worthy supporting roles, each were intriguing and mysterious enough to keep me guessing who I could trust and what exactly was going on. Overall, a very strong cast who helped push the narrative along in some of the more anti-climactic episodes.

I noticed quite a few eerie moments which ultimately added atmosphere to the plot but no clarity. The symbolism of foxes was used throughout with little to no explanation, subtly eluding to the hunt or the doomed fate of the animal somewhat like Rachel’s fate. The barbie shoe, the references to dogs disappearing and the custard shop significance. Each of these subplots added dread to the storyline but once the show came to a close I found myself asking why did those moments exist?   Not all questions need to be answered when it comes to horror, a lot of elements were simply to build terror and unease for the audience but the symbolism was to extreme that I want to know more! Overall, ‘Something Very Bad is Going to Happen’ is a thrilling and deeply engaging Netflix series. The show keeps you on your toes, asking questions and assuming the worst possible outcomes. It had creepy and unsettling moments amongst the supernatural elements and slow pacing and in general I had a really fun time with the show. One comment I would make is episodes 1, 2, 6, 7 and 8 were easily the strongest, the middle episodes all felt like filler for the more memorable moments and the series could have easily cut a lot of build up but to conclude, ‘Something Very Bad is Going to Happen’ is a unique and atmospheric series that will leave you feeling unsettled and disturbed. The story is original and the cast all bring distinctly creepy and intruding performances to screen.
