The first time I watched ‘I Saw the TV Glow’ (2024) I simply didn’t appreciate it and therefore, dismissed it. After some time I went back to the film and I was able to digest its deeper, underlying meanings.
‘I Saw the TV Glow’ takes you on a surrealist journey of self discovery and self acceptance, you explore the trans experience through this film. The moment in a trans person’s life when they realise their identity does not correspond to their assigned gender, director Jane Schoenbrun is able to poetically blur the lines between reality and media.
‘I Saw the TV Glow’ explores themes of coming-of-age, sexuality, trauma, the media and identity through the aesthetic of a bubblegum pink explosion. This is a divisive film and definitely not for everyone but it will make you think.
