Superman (2025) | Film Review

Superman must prove to the world that he is their protector after megalomaniac billionaire Lex Luthor conducts a plan to turn public opinion against him and eliminate Superman forever.

It is no secret that James Gunn has the magic touch when it comes to superheroes. He is able to humanise them through the comedy, make them relatable through otherworldly obstacles but most of all create a universe that sparks hope, excitement and anticipation with audiences.

With this film the DCU is born, resurrected in one sense but mostly rebooted and Superman (2025) was able to throw us into the action without a moments notice. The film catapults you into the life of Superman and forces you to play catch up, wasting no time and propelling audiences into the story as it just starts to get interesting.

Superman (2025) launches a new phase for DC, a colourful, bold, comedic, heartfelt version of Superman that we haven’t seen in over 20 years. James Gunn brings Superman comics to life both visually and figuratively, the film was an explosion of superhero magic that warmed my heart and packed a punch.

The plot was chaotic with several character stories running linear to one another but it worked, it kept me engaged from beginning to end without getting messy. Superman (2025) is a memorable, heart warming, heroic piece of cinema that will leave you feeling energised and optimistic for the future of DC.

This film is the beginning, the first steps in creating a universe for DC characters to live within. With that there were a lot of introductions in this film, some characters felt underdeveloped, particularly Lois. For me, Lois was too timid and overshadowed by the rest of the cast but I have no doubt she will develop into the Lois I love in time.

Corenswet is the perfect embodiment of Superman. I genuinely have nothing to add, he was absolutely faultless and I couldn’t take my eyes off him. He understands the character and every facet of his personality, battling with his identity throughout the film Corenswet was able to tap into the super and the man. Perfectly balancing the core of Superman, he may just be MY Superman.

Brosnahan had a small role and not much time to showcase Lois’ personality, she had some elements of humour and cheekiness but overall I felt she was underdeveloped. We jumped into their already established relationship and I felt a few moments were brushed over in regard to their romance. I wanted to see more but I have no doubt that will come in time.

Hoult is a presence on screen, Luthor is a diabolical character and he embodied his evil persona brilliantly. I loved his realistic approach to the character, Lex is a believable villain and Hoult didn’t make him a caricature but instead kept him tethered to reality and that only added to my hatred towards him.

Fillion and Gathegi had some of my favourite moments in the whole film as Green Lantern and Mr Terrific.  I absolutely loved the Justice Gang and these two brought light hearted, memorable performances that I fell in love with. I simply need more of both these characters, now.

My love for James Gunn has grown stronger and stronger with every film I watched, particularly this superhero features. Music is one of the most important aspects of a film for me, I develop my personal understanding of a character through the musical choices associated with them. My brain just gets music. James Gunn is a director who also values the importance of music and this film does just that, it embodies the essence of Superman and his happy go lucky, lovable persona.

Although Superman (2025) didn’t have a soundtrack like Guardians of the Galaxy for instance, it was still able to reflect the characters in a way I enjoyed. I think Clark is punk rock, no doubt about it.

Superman’s costume stepped out of the comic book, the colours were vibrant and reflected his pure intent and love for doing good. David Corenswet explained in an interview that maybe Superman chose his costume to help humans feel comfortable around him, maybe he wanted to make people feel at ease around him by wearing bright read underpants and a cape. I loved this detail, he understands the character on a level that warms my heart.

The character of Superman is incredibly close to my heart, along with millions of others. This film does him justice, in every way. He was vulnerable, flawed and undeniably lovable. Corenswet is the Superman we have been waiting for and I cannot express how pleased I am with his performance.

Overall, Superman (2025) is a masterclass in the school of James Gunn. He delivers comedy and gut-wrenching, heartfelt moments in the form of a magical superhero movie. In my opinion he has injected new life into these characters and this is the rebrand DC characters deserve, the characters I grew up loving and idolising needed James Gunn to fly in and save the day. This is the beginning of a very exciting future for DC and I am undeniably excited for whatever is next.
