Who would have thought when the first movie came out in 2019 we'd be seeing a second one, definitely not me. Netflix have become infamous for their low budget teenage rom-coms with random storylines and money grabbing sequels. We've seen Kissing Booths, To All the Boys, Sierra Burgess... we've seen a lot of sappy teen movies that see a quiet shy girl landing the popular boy. Netflix seems to eat up this kind of storyline every time and I don't see it stopping any time soon.
Don't get me wrong, we all love a rom com but Netflix appear to be releasing these as a second thought, the characters are weak and under developed, the storylines are poor and if a little more thought or effect when into these films, maybe we'd have better results. Tall Girl is based around Jodi, the tall girl in school, in this film she tries to deal with her new found popularity after being the school outcast for so many years. Her popularity starts to get in the way of her relationships and those around her who really care. This film tries to tackle themes of bullying, anxiety and panic attacks, it shoehorns in these bigger issues into a mediocre plot. I am sure this film has inspired or encouraged young girls who identity with Jodi to be themselves and 'stand tall' but in reality, regardless of the impact it's had... this film is basic and badly written. The characters are boring and Jodi isn't a fun or relatable character, she is one dimensional and her identity and entire personality is 'her being tall' which is unrealistic and sad because she could be so much more.
