SISTER WIVES

2024

Director Louisa Connolly-Burnham

Romance, Drama

Short

29 mins

Sister Wives follows the story of two young women living in a strict, fundamentalist, polygamous society. Kaidence and Galilee find themselves bound to one another, under the same roof and in the same marriage. At first, the women are distant and hesitant but once their husband leaves them alone, they develop new feelings for each other.

Directed by Louisa Connolly-Burnham, Sister Wives is a beautiful queer romance that places its characters in a harsh, judgmental and close minded community where their true identity is a cardinal sin. Sister Wives is poetic in its approach, these women live simple lives but their chemistry was electric from the moment they met. I was engrossed into this unconventional romance, my heart ached for these women which made the ending all the more magnificent.

Louisa Connolly-Burnham directed, wrote and starred in the feature alongside Mia McKenna-Bruce. They both deliver outstanding performances that bring intense emotion to the plot, I was drawn in by both of their portrayals of these women and I was enticed by their forbidden relationship. Sister Wives is a beautifully crafted short film, it is shot to highlight the simplicity of their lives, the mundane routine and the often boring day to day life - the film is intimate and passionate through its framing and shot choices. The audience get to experience every look, every smirk and every moment of intimacy building between the women, I loved watching their relationship grow and evolve in, what felt like, real time.

Sister Wives is an example of the endless possibilities of short filmmakers, the potential of short films and the utter beauty that can be brought to screen in a number of minutes. Sister Wives is effortlessly memorable and utterly heartfelt.

Sister Wives is a beyond moving exploration of connection, above all else this film about love and relationships in every form. Sister Wives explores truth, being open and following your heart. I was taken by the films originality, the concept and plot was something fresh for me to experience, I was gripping onto every word and empowered by the pure beauty of it all.

I highly recommended this short feature for anyone wanting a thought-provoking watch.
