Arriving at the cinema I was adamant this film couldn’t exceed my exceptions and quite frankly, I had convinced myself it wouldn’t be as good as the original from 2000. I can confirm, I was wrong and I feel indebted to Ridley Scott for creating something so meaningful and reminding me why going to the cinema is such a special experience and why revisiting classic stories doesn’t always lead to disaster and disappointment.

Watching Gladiator II (2024) in the cinema was a complete spectacle, the opening credits alone were a beautiful transition into the brutality and chaos that was soon to follow. I was instantly pulled into the world and I was convinced by the powerful storytelling, epic action sequences and an array of memorable, moving performances.

The story of Gladiator II (2024) directly links to the original film, giving the lead character a solid foundation to connect with audiences. Paul Mescal held his own throughout and surprised me with his screen presence and powerful voice, he challenged the essence of Russell Crowe just enough for old fans to appreciate him and new fans to love him.

The film was a cinematic epic in several ways, primarily down to the unbelievable set design and the mass size of the action sequences but along with all the bravado was a linear plot that took you on a journey of heartache and emotion.

Gladiator II (2024) had impeccable pacing, with peaks and valleys of action and story there was no room to think, the film continued to feed my attention between the heavy and soft moments.

Aside from the sets, costumes, props and storytelling, the performances were outstanding. Alongside Mescal we saw unforgettable character journeys from Pedro pascal and Denzel Washington. Washington’s character is easily one of his greatest villains, I was engrossed in his every word and charmed by his charisma. Washington was a central cog in all the action, his character moved everything forward and I found his performance to be one of the most gripping.

Essentially, Gladiator II (2024) had reminded me how entertaining the raw depiction of men fighting can be. Gladiator II (2024) is a film about revenge and power, it is a film that will take you on a journey whilst showcasing some of the most epic action sequences. This film deserves to be seen in the cinema, and it will engross you with every punch, every stab and every wound.
