Sound of Falling (2025) | Film Review

Sound of Falling (2025) tells the story of 4 generations living under the same roof and how memory binds them together in history. Following several young women and their experience of life centred around their family farmhouse.

Sound of Falling is a story of generational trauma, how the past finds a way of seeping through the cracks of life. How broken families and secrets find their way through, Sound of Falling is a deeply thought provoking piece of masterful cinema that transports you into several time periods through intelligent editing and mesmerising cinematography.

This is a non-linear web of stories which explores the many facets of life and death. Sound of Falling approaches the topic of family, grief, connection and memory through a surrealist lens to capture trauma through the eyes of the characters. Experimenting with an abundance of camera techniques and intelligent use of lighting which guides you through the story. Sound of Falling is hauntingly memorable, the film manages to make arresting choices of extreme lighting and framing to capture the most perfect shots whilst evoking an eerie, ghostly atmosphere. Sound of Falling is a densely packed story which meaning hidden in every frame, the performances are mesmerising but the look of the film is what truly makes it special.

‘If these walls could talk’, is a quote that spun around my head whilst watching this film. Our home holds so much memory, our space bares witness to so many secrets. Sound of Falling expands on this notion and connects generations living under the same roof. I found Sound of Falling to be a hidden gem, a film which I wouldn’t usually stumble upon but found myself falling into the beauty of its execution.

I had the pleasure of speaking with cinematographer Fabian who gave me a few insights into his incredible vision for Sound of Fallings gorgeously haunting cinematography.
