Festen or The Celebration (1998) is a Danish black comedy-drama directed by Thomas Vinterberg.

Following the story of a businessman celebrating his birthday with his family and many respected citizens of the town. However, during the course of the party, many dark secrets about the family's past are revealed. This film arguably portrays one of cinema's most messed-up families ever.

Festen is considered the first film made under the rules of the radical Dogme 95 movement and for that reason alone I think it is an incredibly insightful and unique piece of cinema. Although controversial and the subject matter is dark and disturbing, think of this film as the succession to succession - family dynamics, dark secrets and a representation of the upper classes.

Sorry - this is a tricky one to find online.

Available on DVD at Amazon Prime, eBay or Criterion Collection 🇬🇧
