When her teenage son dies in a car accident, Manuela returns to Barcelona in search of her ex-husband, who has since transitioned, to inform her about the tragedy. Directed by Pedro Almodóvar, this beautifully tragic feature is a story of motherhood, friendship and grief. Shot through a gorgeous lens of colour and love, Almodóvar is a genius filmmaker when it comes to memorable storytelling and visual spectacle.
Cecilia Roth plays the bereaved mother alongside the beautiful Penélope Cruz. Roth is the core of this story, her unforgettable performance is powerful and heartbreaking. With light moments and dark moments this film was an explosion of creativity and love. Taking its audience through the highs and lows of moving on and adapting to life’s challenges.
This is one of my new favourite Almodóvar features, it beautifully showcases his symphony of vibrant primary shades and clashing prints, whilst portraying his love of the colour red. Almodóvar’s work is full of metaphor and meaning but particularly within this feature red is used extensively and symbolically around Manuela’s struggle with her loss and love.
