Speak No Evil (2024) Review: A New Terrifying Addition to Blumhouse's Horror Movie Collection

A dream holiday turns into a living nightmare when an American couple and their daughter spend the weekend at a British family's idyllic country estate.

Blumhouse Productions continue to produce captivating horror films with compelling storylines and utterly fascinating twists and turns. When I see the Blumhouse Motion Logo before I film, I sit back in my chair and wait to see what unfolds. Although a remake of the 2022 Danish film of the same name, Speak No Evil (2024) was an enigmatic, nail biting thriller with plenty of surprises.

Speak No Evil (2024). [Film] Directed by James Watkins. Blumhouse Productions.

Written and directed by James Watkins, this American psychological horror film will have you cowering at the talents of James McAvoy. McAvoy is an actor you can trust, his character in Speak No Evil is one of his most captivating to date. I found his performance to be the glue which held this film together, his comedic approach layered with terrifying unpredictably made this film tense from the very beginning. His character was so perfectly constructed, once you felt like you understood him, he changed his persona. Keeping the audience on their toes, McAvoy is one of the best.

Speak No Evil (2024) includes all the typical horror movie tropes, a remote location, friendly strangers and unanswered questions but all of these elements make for a suspenseful, engaging watch. The boundaries of social acceptance and parenting is blurred and therefore, had the opportunity to become extremely uncomfortable.

I enjoyed this film because it played with the idea of how far will you allow them to go, how long until you stand up for yourself, when will the tension be broken. I was genuinely on the edge of my seat, biting my nails with anticipation for the ultimately reveal. Speak No Evil (2024) did not disappoint, McAvoy and the cast all gave incredibly alluring performances and the story was written to include plenty of awkward, anxious moments. This film was sickly suspenseful and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
