You know a Christmas movie is a success when you add it to the list to watch again next year, Noelle (2019) is a new addition to Disney plus and it’s about time. Starring Anna Kendrick and Bill Hader this new Christmas classic sees Santa Claus’ children Nick and Noelle taking over the family business, Nick being the next Santa and Noelle being his supportive side-kick. Of course, nothing falls into place like it should and Nick does not want to be Santa so his sister spent the whole movie trying to convince him otherwise whilst discovering her own unique gifts. This review does not include any spoilers, so make sure you keep reading if you want to know a little bit about the movie before you watch and if you want to know what I thought.
This adorable family movie exceeds all your Christmas story expectations, with plenty of Christmas puns and adorable festive outfits galore! Sometimes the key to a successful Christmas movie is harnessing the essence of Christmas, it doesn’t often have to be the best movie ever but it has to put a smile on your face and bring a tear to your eye and Noelle (2019) did both!
We all know Disney for being the experts at creating magic, especially around Christmas and I think that is why I enjoyed Noelle (2019) so much, because it really felt like a effortlessly magically movie whist also sending a really beautiful message, anybody can do anything! Without revealing too much about the narrative, what I will say is that this movie tells young audiences that despite your family, friends or society having expectations of you because of your gender, it means nothing! Noelle (2019) depicts a story that allows anyone to fore fill their dreams, no matter who they are and I truly love that. Disney has changed the game for future Christmas movies, they’ve stomped stereotypes and have encouraged a number of different interpretations of ‘Santa’ and the whole Christmas tradition we have all come to follow.
To conclude, if you are a fan of senseless fun and silly holiday movie comedy give Noelle (2019) a watch. The story is adorable and Anna Kendrick plays a very important role in my enjoyment of this film, she gives an effortlessly innocent and ditsy character performance that is really fun and silly! To me, movies like this are the only thing I want to watch at Christmas, something that will make me smile and maybe cry a little!
