Must-See Hugh Grant in Captivating Performance, A24's Heretic (2024) Film Review

A heretic is a person believing in or practising religious heresy, this film is a philosophical thriller with a thought provoking promise and an intelligent execution.

Heretic (2024) is an unconventional ‘horror’, if it can strictly be called a horror. Heretic (2024) won’t terrify you but it will attempt to scare you into submission, I found the general message of this film to be genius. Religion has been a core topic within the horror genre but it has never been approached in this way, as a question. Heretic (2024) questions the idea of belief in the most sadistic way but entertaining nonetheless.

Hugh Grant delivers the most disarmingly charming performance with a subtle undertone of true control. Mr. Reed draws you in with his questions and makes you think, his interrogation  flies off the screen to you. That was one of the most impactful moments within this film, the first half was very dialogue heavy before any action took place but his monologuing was incredibly engaging and stimulating.

Every word and every action was intentional in this film, every moment was a chance to challenge the viewers and the characters morals. Exploring the blueprints of religions and society, discussing the divine decision; do you really believe?

Personally, I was drawn into this film from the very beginning. The opening scene sees two young missionaries discussing the taboo subject of sex, this scene sets the tone of questioning your beliefs, discussing temptation and taboo.

This film is a study, an attempt to discover the truth but ultimately we discover the truth is unattainable and instead, despite your beliefs, we all have the same fate. I cannot recommend this film enough, I found it to be one of the most intriguing and intelligent horror films I’ve seen since ‘Get Out’ (2017). It was uniquely disturbing and memorable in every way, I keep remembering more moments and it continues to fascinate me.
