Is Prime Videos G20 (2025) just a Remake of Die Hard?

When terrorists take over the G20 summit, US President Danielle Sutton (Davis) uses her governing and military experience to defend her family, fellow leaders, and the world.

Have you ever seen the movie Die Hard (1988)? If you haven’t heard of it, its a little movie that sees Detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) fighting a group of terrorists led by by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) to save his wife who is held hostage. Die Hard is one of the most globally recognised action thrillers for its pure originality, unmatched cast and truly thrilling storyline. The reason I bring up this film is because G20 (2025) seemed like a carbon copy of it. Sure, they changed a few details, genderbend a few characters but the general story of this film is Die Hard.

In saying that, the first 20 minutes or so was intriguing and I was invested in Viola Davis as president. She brings an intensity to every one of her roles and without her this film would have crumbled a lot sooner. The film opens by introducing us to Danielle Sutton and her family, the film uses the set up of her husband and children to later on use them as leverage. Sadly though, the only family member who was truly likeable was Danielle herself, the rest of the family were unnecessary story arcs in my opinion and distracted from Danielle’s rescue mission. The use of her family attempted to add emotional attachment for an audience but it wasn’t needed, Danielle should have had enough to fight for with all the world leaders held hostage.

Alongside the powerhouse that is Viola Davis is Anthony Starr, known for his infamous role as Homelander in the popular series The Boys. Starr leads as the heist master, the terrorist, the angry New Zealander but from where i’m standing he acted as the simple, underdeveloped version of Hans Gruber.  Starr is a brilliant actor but we’ve seen him play this role before, it felt too familiar and honestly his character Rutledge was just boring and I expected a lot more from him. In saying that, the lack of likability and development is not down to the actors, that is a fault with the script. G20 (2025) was a predictable story with little originality to separate it from the thousands of heist movies out there. I’d seen this film before and sadly it was worse than all the other versions I’d seen.

If you needed more proof that this film is a literally twin of Die Hard note that the terrorists are working towards the same goal; robbing the wealthy leaders and crashing currencies to get rich. Also, Danielle and Rutledge exchange with one another through walkie talkies and finally, the grand finale, Rutledge literally falls over a cliff at the end of the film… sound familiar?

I was expecting a lot more from a film starring Viola Davis and I was disappointed to say the least that they didn’t use her to her best ability. I get so saddened by studios recreating, reimagining and regurgitating classic movies. Please stop, this film isn’t fooling anyone, we’ve seen this story before, many, many times.
