This movie in a nutshell is a huge load of nostalgia and I absolutely loved it. Although I am only just an adult myself this film made me look back on my childhood and remember the times I used to watch Winnie-the-Pooh and relish in those memories. Christopher Robin (2018) has really touched me and left me thinking how brilliantly told the story was and most of all how special Winnie-the-Pooh really is to me.
Christopher Robin, now a family man living in London, receives a surprise visit from his old pal Winnie-the-Pooh. With Christopher’s help, Pooh embarks on a journey to find his friends and in the process Christopher discovers the real joys in life.
The film begins with a story book style, introducing us to Christopher and Pooh and telling us about their friendship. Then we turn the page and Christopher is sent off the boarding school and has to leave the hundred acre wood behind, he promises he’ll never forget but we all know he will. Although the beginning was a little slow as I was already familiar with the characters for new watchers it was explained in great depth and left no questions unanswered.
Although Christopher Robin is the star of the show and of course Ewan McGregor did a brilliant job of bringing that character to life, Winnie-the-Pooh stole the show. The writing was exceptional, Pooh’s mannerisms and voice created a perfect representation of the bear I grew up with. Of course that fact that Jim Cummings (the original Winnie-the-Pooh voice actor) voiced Pooh helped the illusion but everything else about the character was just as perfect. The CGI was seamless, the bear could have been real! I was stunned at how realistic his movements were, he was toy like but also human like.
The hidden message within this film is essentially, don’t grow up too fast. Christopher Robin was forced to be an adult and forced to forget childish things, meaning when he is a father he’ll make his child feel the same way. I thought it was really special, adults do forget to relax and enjoy life sometimes and although this film is for children I personally thought the message was for adults to appreciate their children and the child inside of themselves.
Overall, Christopher Robin (2018) has really stayed with me after watching. It has warmed my heart and really made me appreciate memories and life in general. Although I may be taking the film a little too seriously it just made me very happy! If you are scared that it is going to make you sad or upset like I was, trust me this film is done in such a way that it cannot make you upset. The story has such a nice rhythm to it that it keeps you intrigued and keeps you entertained rather than emotional like other Disney films.
The acting and especially the special effects really make this film magical, I am so glad that Winnie-the-Pooh is back in the spotlight. He is far to special to be forgotten.
